Last Menu of the Pop-Up experience…

Michele Laudig, Agent of Secrets, wrote big things about our little diner :

“One of the most exciting spots on the Phoenix culinary map is destined to disappear in a matter of weeks. It’s planned obsolescence, actually, as chef Payton Curry and his wife Shantal have only signed on to run their Welcome Diner pop-up restaurant until July 4. After that, they’ll be doing some traveling before focusing on creating a full-time, brick-and-mortar restaurant.

Talk about seasonality. This is the ultimate in ephemeral dining, a snapshot of where Curry’s at creatively now that he’s flying solo (he left Tempe’s Caffe Boa back in February), and what local produce happens to be at the peak of ripeness — favas one week, heirloom tomatoes another. Every day is different here, every experience unique.

The fleeting beauty of it all has me thinking about a concept that the Japanese call ichi-go, ichi-e. One chance, one meeting — appreciate this moment now, because that’s all you have. By fall, Curry will have moved on, and we’ll have a twinge of fond nostalgia.” (finish reading)

Payton Curry Pops Up at the Welcome Diner

By Shannon Armour

Thanks to Chef Payton Curry, life has returned to the beloved Welcome Diner, which sat sad and empty on the corner of 10th street and Roosevelt for far too long. The infamous chef kicked off the first night of his three-month pop-up project to a packed house-and a packed patio-this past Friday night.

The tiny diner was glowing as people filled the nine seats…continue reading

Monday Menu June 6th

Battle Heirloom was hilarious last night. People talking smack about one and finding out it’s from that farmer. Talk about eating your words. It’s all not only just “good” it’s great to blind people and let the fruits of the labor shine thru…

EASTER menu

The wonderful thing about working side by side with a farming family that could hang on the East or West Coast is that it makes you want to eat your veggies before you try and get up off of the table.  This year for Easter The Welcome Diner will be dedicating its entire menu to the bounty that has been harvested by the hard ass working McClendon Farms Family.  Working with the McClendon Crew has been a highlight in my life and constantly reminds me that this is exactly where I need to be in my life.  Career? Nope. Lifestyle? Ed Zachary.
